A sur-Real story!

It all began 15 years ago during an International Correspondence Chess Tournament.

Remo Reale was playing with black against a German opponent. At the first move - 1. e4 - sure to have replied with e5, he actually played e6, the French Defense. When he realized the mistake he asked the referee to change move, but it was useless; the referee did not allow it, not conscious to have marked a tragic fate. The game continued till the 4th move. Then the days passed and Remo looked forward to the opponent’s response; but he had got no news from him, he asked explanations to the referee, who informed him of the opponent’s death (the first), something that unfortunately may happen...

After a few time there was a team match Italy - Brazil. Once again our hero had black side and he deliberately replied with e6 to the Brazilian e4, in order to change his repertoire. So the match went on and stopped at sixth move; then everything was silent, there were no more news of the Brazilian. Reale asked for clarification from opposing team’s captain, to understand why he did not respond. After a long wait he was incredibly well informed that even this time player had died (the second). The captain of the opposing team replaced his player and the game picked up where it was left off. Before the new brazilian player could make its next move he gave no more news (the third!), and with him also Brazilian team.

Remo did not give himself peace, then came the long-awaited reply letter and everything was clear: it was written inside that substitute had passed away and captain saw fit not to make use of a new player. The letter was brought from Remo to our club for the translation, we have direct evidence of that… At this point a doubt crept into Remo’s mind, were he and the small step - little push of king’s pawn to cause similar events?

But all these episodes were not enough to prevent him from participating in the next tournament Italy - Algeria, which was just around the corner. The idea of a new challenge was too tempting. Remo played the now deadly well - known French Defense even against the unfortunate Algerian, and even after 8th move during the famous exchange variation it happened again, all was silent. After a few days Algerian team captain informed him that his player had been slain in a riot (the fourth!!). Absurd but true, there are those who still can not believe it when you say that chess game is the most violent than anything else.

Now Remo was feared by all, but he wanted to challenge once more his fate, nobody could stop him. He decided to participate in the semifinals of the world championship, this time the move he wanted to play was e5, but casually, in the postcard he wrote e6, again the French! Reale challenged the move, he could not allow another player to risk his life. The opponent who perhaps was aware of his reputation allowed him to continue with e5 to avoid risks, and maybe this was to save him, but the German referee applied instead the regulation to the letter. Anyway, Remo did not allow him to prevail, he contacted Italian team referee and made his case by pointing out that by agreement between the players it is permitted to switch the move, judging his colleague incompetent and other sentences a little over the top. Italian manager told him he should not be allowed to offend his fellow due to his long experience and expertise.

Reale never mind actual regulation and continued the game with e5, writing a letter to Italian referee to keep him aware of his decision, but the latter did not respond, and a few days later his daughter replied: her father was dead..! (the fifth!!!).

For good of us all, our protagonist has stopped play by mail, however, if we were to meet him in the game at a table, be very careful to open with 1 e4.

I would not risk...

N.B. Deliberately not been made the names of the players and the referee
